2024!

A very Happy New Year to anyone reading! 2023 was filled with wonderful career transitions and new experiences that I won’t soon forget. Caity, myself, and our two cats (Sammy Jr and Frankie) continue to love life and look forward to a healthy and successful 2024.

2023 Highlights include:
– Joining the faculty at Kennesaw State University as Interim Brass Chair and Trumpet instructor! I get to oversee a department of 72 students (16 of whom are mine!) and was able to support these awesome students and amazing faculty in bringing together recitals, chamber music programs, juries, weekly studio classes and a brass career seminar!
– Receiving tenure with the New Mexico Philharmonic! I love these musicians and the programs we get to play together are exciting and artistically challenging!
-Performing with the Atlanta Symphony, Hawai’i Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, AZ Music Fest Festival Orchestra, playing some Nutcrackers with the Georgia and Gwinnett Ballets, and some broadway shows with AZ Opera and the Phoenix Theatre Company!
-Meeting and chatting with Gayle King when she accepted her Walter Cronkite Award at ASU. She then called to let me know she had acknowledged me on CBS Mornings- It was one of those rare moments in life where you really feel seen. It is so inspiring what fervor, passion, and curiosity she lives her life and I aspire to emulate that a bit more in 2024-beyond.
-Co-producing/arranging/orchestrating the release of Milquetoast & Co’s latest LP, “Run, Rant, Rave”.
-Playing trumpet every damn day!

Fall 2023

It’s October in the blink of an eye. Earlier this summer, I accepted an interim position as Instructor of Trumpet and Brass Area Chair at Kennesaw State University. We are already approaching week 8 and it has been such a joy working alongside my new colleagues and students! Also- I absolutely love the cultural vibrance of Atlanta and the surrounding area.

Upcoming performances of note:

October 16, 7:30pm. Faculty recital, KSU as part of our Music, Nature, and Sustainability Festival

October 28,29, 7pm and 2pm. Ghostbusters! With the Hawaii Symphony

Nov 10, 8pm. Bach/Vivaldi concerto with the KSU Wind Symphony!

Nov 18, 6pm. Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique w/ New Mexico Philharmonic

Dec 1-3, various times. Nutcracker with the Georgia Ballet

I’ll leave you with a recent release from some of my favorite and frequent collaborators, James McAndrew and Milquetoast & CO. This is from their upcoming LP which I co-produced, arranged, and played some trumpet on. This session was particularly heart wrenching and features the Section Quartet (recording credits include Christina Aguilera, Foo Fighters, Iggy Pop, Sam Phillips, etc) playing my string arrangements and stunning vocal stylings by Lauren Frihauf. I played a little trumpet in there too. I’m not crying, you’re crying *sniffle sniffle

GO OWLS!

spring 2023

Holy cow! My favorite season is here! Baseball season! Some exceedingly exciting performances over the last couple months with the Phoenix Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Phoenix Theatre Company, and the AZ Opera have kept me vibrantly sleep deprived- but I’m excited to be approaching the end of the semester and seasons to get back to writing and recording over the summer. I may even showcase my newly acquired finger picking acoustic guitar skills I have worked on throughout the pandemic! I have to muster up some courage in the meantime…

The biggest recent event was meeting and playing for Gayle King as she received the 39th annual Walter Cronkite award at ASU. She was moved enough to feature some of my career highlights on CBS mornings the very next morning. She even called me to let me know- a beautiful gesture that I will carry with me. It reminds me of how magical and connecting a life in music can be, and it has left me inspired, humbled, and f***ing motivated!!!! Let’s go!!!! Here’s the clip:

Fall 2022

What a year, what a summer. I’m happy to have joined Grand Canyon University as the instructor of trumpet (20 students wheeeee!) and the New Mexico Philharmonic as Associate Principal/3rd trumpet. Big things coming up: Tchaikovsky Festival with NMP, lead trumpet with The Who in Denver, and the magnificent fall season in Phoenix where you will find me, most certainly, in the pool when I’m not pining over the horn.

Spring 2022

Very excited to be seemingly turning a corner on the pandemic and have been performing a ton! I’ve been lucky to continue subbing regularly with the Phoenix Symphony including this past week where I had the opportunity to rip some solos from classic broadway tunes… a thrill and nice to play some of that music again.

As some may have heard, my dear friend, mentor, and colleague, Alan Hood, took a hard fall and is currently in rehabilitation. I am humbled, as always, to step in and cover his position at the University of Denver while he is in recovery. Happy Holidays

It’s been a great fall and winter in sunny Arizona. I’ve been happy to avoid snow completely for the first winter in my life. I’ve been grateful for all the nice phone calls and text messages that I’ve received since CBS Mornings rebranded and aired their rebranded weekly morning show, featuring my solo trumpet playing. As of late, I’ve enjoyed getting to play with the Phoenix Symphony on some pops and holiday concerts as well as sitting in with some great players in the Red Rock Brass Quintet at the Botanical Gardens in Phoenix.

2022 has a lot to look forward to: Continuing work on my country record in Nashville (which features the trumpet as a solo instrument), Some solo trumpet releases, and just began work on a microtonal ambient house/techno project inspired by late 70s early 80s Chicago and Detroit house scenes- also ft. trumpet as a solo instrument. Stay Tuned.
